Therapeutic Groupwork

We use the term groupwork to refer to online or face-to-face group-based psychotherapeutic, psychoeducational, and/or peer support self-help interventions.

Group-based interventions can be categorised as interactive or non-interactive. The mechanisms of change are different, and different skills are required to design and deliver these groups.

INTERACTIVE GROUPS

Interactive groups – where group members talk to each other, sharing different experiences and perspectives, giving and receiving feedback, and providing mutual support for example.

NON-INTERACTIVE GROUPS

Non-interactive groups – where group members do not talk to each other such as an informative webinar or lecture-style presentation.

  • Group-based interventions can also be classified as a stand-alone treatment or as an adjunct to other psychotherapeutic interventions.
  • Groups can have different formats such as a one-off workshop delivered with a single session or as a fixed-term programme delivered with several sessions over several weeks.
  • Group-based interventions can also be classified as closed groups (where people join and leave all at the same time) or slow-open (where people join and leave at different times).
